Many fortnights ago there was a song. It may have formed part of a
musical or somesuch; it may have been from a film. It was sung - I
think - by a female singist, and contained the immortal words

# Doobie doobie dum
# Dum doobie doobie doobie doobie dum
# Dum doobie doobie
# Doobie doobie dum dum
# Doobie doobie dum dum
# Doobie doobie dum dum dum

Or something very similar. It was the chorus. I haven't the remotest
idea what the verse (if there was one) might have been, nor its tune.

What, though, was the song? Who sang it, in what, and why? The tune
for the chorus is sort of, er... oh. It's more difficult than I thought
to portray a tune in writing. Hooter.

Sorry, but no. That's 'Breakin' Up Is Hard To Do', and is 'down doobie
down down down', not 'doobie doobie dum dum'. Nice try though.

I /think/ the singer was female; TAAW I think she was singing to a child
or children. I've got an idea the song was meant to be reassuring. Not
a lullabye exactly, but along those lines.

Peggy Lee wrote the music and lyrics - perhaps she also performed it.

I thought of that, but the rhythm pattern doesn't fit unless it's very
poorly unforgotten.

The Del Vikings "Come Go with Me" has a similar refrain, but I
don't think it's the one you're after. Then there's The Fleetwoods' "Come
Softly to Me", but I think the one you want might be "Seven Little Girls,
Sittin' in the Back Seat" -- at least that's the chorus that I kept
hearing when I read your lines above:

Seven Little Girls Sittin' In The Back Seat

(Dee doody doom doom)
(Dee doody doom doom)
(Dee doody doom doom, DOOM)

Seven little girls sittin' in the back seat
Huggin and a'kissin with Fred
I said, why don't one of you come up and sit beside me
And this is what the seven girls said

(All together now, one, two, three)
(Keep you mind on your drivin')
(Keep you hands on the wheel)
(Keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead)
(We're havin' fun sittin' in the back seat)
(Kissin' and a'huggin with Fred)
(Dee doody doom doom, dee doody doom doom)
(Dee doody doom doom, DOOM)

Drove through the town, drove through the country
Showed 'em how a motor could go
I said, how do you like my triple carburetor
And one of them whispered low

(All together now, one, two, three)
(Keep you mind on your drivin')
(Keep you hands on the wheel)
(Keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead)
(We're havin' fun sittin' in the back seat)
(Kissin' and a'huggin with Fred)
(Dee doody doom doom, dee doody doom doom)
(Dee doody doom doom, DOOM)

Seven little girls smoochin' in the back seat
Every one in love with Fred
I said "you don't need me, I'll get off at my house"
And this is what the seven girls said

(All together now, one, two, three)
(Keep you mind on your drivin')
(Keep you hands on the wheel)
(Keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead)
(We're havin' fun sittin' in the back seat)
(Kissin' and a'huggin with Fred)

All of them in love with Fred
(Dee doody doom doom)
Kissin' and a'huggin with Fred
(Dee doody doom doom)
Wish that I could be like Fred
(DOOM)

Isn't there a phone service where you can hum a tune and it will

The nearest thing I can come up with is "Strangers in the Night" as sung
by yer Francis Sinatra.

Oh, I say! That's marvellous! It suggests the theme from Tom Thumb,
and the words certainly look familiar. I'd like to find the tune
somewhere to listen to, but it does look like it could be that.
