A mad inventor tries his hand at his unique ? musical instrument :

Not too far from me - in Guelph Ontario.
If, for some strange reason, you're forced to pronounce "Guelph"
.. just think of the sound a dog makes when choking on a chicken bone.

Reminds me a bit of wind chimes: all right for a bit. But should the neighbors
put them up and then leave them permanently in the wind...

It has since reminded me of an instrument I had seen: soundboard, circle of
dowels/rods, vertically arranged, so the rods form a cylinder. Half the circle
metal, other half wood. The lengths of the rods stepped, presumably tuned.
Played with a rosined bow around the outside of the cylinder...

At the time I presumed it was unique -- maybe the description will give it a
name, and turn up a picture. I failed on googling anything remotely like it.

Has someone been cross breeding hurdy-gurdys with xylophones?

Dunno ... but years ago, one of the blokes from 10cc (Lol Creme ?)
invented some kind of rotary bow thing which could be used to make
continuous tones on a guitar.

I dont know if it ever got in to production, but I think it may have
morphed in to something which could be attached to the bridge.

(there may be nothing new under the sun)

There's a device called an EBow which uses a pickup and driver coil to
vibrate a string. I have one which I never get round to using. I think
its most prominent use was by Big Country.

Niiiice. This is the realization of an idea a bunch of engineers had at lunch
and never built...

It was either talk of coriolis mass flow meters, or some sort of resonant
measurement. The idea flowing form that was to build a magnetic device that
would find and drive the/a resonance of a bit of metal, the equivalent of
hitting it with a hammer, only less and longer. Coil to drive, pickup coil, amp,
bit of filtering to get the fundamental, some sort of spacer to make everything
work. Stick it on a bar of steel and riiiing.

All interesting stuff, although my general view on "this sort of thing"
is that if Jeff Beck didnt have one then I probably dont need one.

However, the thing I was thinking about earlier was called "The Gizmo" -
gory details are at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gizmo

Oh yeah -- these are toys & icing on the cake for those who have mastered
something.

Jeff Beck *did* use something like the "Talk Box"...

If "this sort of thing" had been around when Jeff Beck was playing, he
would probably have had one and used it.

I didn't realise he was round so recently. He also used guitar synths on
his last albums.

The Gizmo was released to the public in 1975, the Ebow in 1976.

Save time, just hit the hurdy-gurdy with big xylophone hammers,
[ob. weasel smiley].
