..for another 3 years! I really thought I'd flunked the eyesight test this
time, so SWMBO and I were working out the changes we'd have to make without
the car. I was pretty nervous when got a letter from DVLA this morning but,
woohoo, it was my new licence. Relief.

So how did they test your eyesight online?

I stared into my webcam and they stared back. No, silly, I had to go into
Fcrpfniref who do the tests for DVLA, but they're not allowed to tell me the
results.

How did you get into the situation? I mean ... the eyesight of most of us in
this venerable Group is getting worse month by month, simply by cause of
decrepitude. So what in particular sparked the driving ban (and how long did
it last?)
(Apologies if I've missed an old thread!)

Ah. no. I just avoided a ban. DVLA told me to get a test done so I did and
felt I really hadn't done well - glaucoma taking down my peripheral vision
and one eye with not much central vision either. It seems I passed the test
and have my licence renewed, but yesterday I got a follow-up letter from
DVLA saying, more or less, OK this time but watch it.

Thanks Peter -- so just a routine "We see you are about to pass 'X' years: Do

Yep, that's about it. Being on the wrong side of 70 (by quite a margin!) my
licence is only valid for 3 years, and they send me off to Specsavers for a
check-up before they'll renew it. It's happened before but I felt much more
confident on those occasions.

The DVLA vision test is a *very* low bar and if you’re at all unhappy with
your ability to see seriously consider stopping driving. My mother carried
on driving until she was 90 with severe macular degeneration yet still had
enough vision to pass the DVLA test. Her driving definitely wasn’t safe
towards the end.

I have given up driving for several reasons:

General eyesight is poor.

Night vision is terrible.

Reaaction time is crap.

This makes me a danger to myself and others.

I hope that public transport in your area is good enough for your
purposes.

It is, buses are free to geezers, pimply faced youth and
the handicapped. Anywhere a bus goes in Scotland I ride for free.

Lots of frequent buses.

Oh, good.

I don't own a car, or drive if I don't have to, but I wouldn't like to
lose the option.

My driving license is due for renewal in a couple of months.
I can't honestly sign the health declaration so I've just lately
given up driving and sold my car. Fortunately Mrs Sn!pe is
still able to drive, otherwise we'd be taking taxis everywhere.

Heh, that would be far too flashy for shy and retiring wading birds
like us. That's why we wear such excellent camouflage.

One of the drivers of my local bus wears a, what I am told is a RR
chauffeur's peaked hat. Makes a change from a reversed baseball cap.
